Traffic Management Center Operator


Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. (GPI) is seeking a full-time Traffic Management Center (TMC) Operator to support the Nassau County Traffic Management Center in Westbury, NY.


This is a fully on-site position. Employees are required to report to the Traffic Management Center in Westbury for all scheduled shifts. This is not a remote or hybrid position.


Job Description

The Nassau County Traffic Management Center is a 24-hour operations center responsible for monitoring and managing traffic conditions throughout Nassau County. The TMC controls more than 1,000 traffic signals and monitors more than 150 traffic cameras throughout the County.

TMC Operators monitor traffic cameras, traffic signal systems, and other traffic management systems; respond to roadway incidents and congestion; coordinate with emergency responders and other agencies; and make authorized traffic signal timing adjustments to help improve traffic flow.


Responsibilities

  • Monitoring traffic cameras, traffic signal systems, roadway conditions, and other traffic management systems
  • Responding to roadway incidents, congestion, traffic signal issues, and other operational conditions
  • Adjusting traffic signal timing in response to incidents and changing traffic conditions
  • Answering phones and communicating with the public and other agencies
  • Coordinating with police, emergency services, public works personnel, field personnel, and other County, State, and local agencies
  • Coordinating planned and unplanned roadway events, lane closures, and special events
  • Posting traveler information to roadside electronic message signs and social media
  • Performing basic troubleshooting of traffic management, communications, and network equipment
  • Preparing reports, updating database information, and performing other TMC-related administrative tasks


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree from an accredited college or university preferred
  • Experience in traffic operations, transportation, public safety, dispatch, computer operations, or a related field preferred
  • Knowledge of computers in a Windows-based environment, including Microsoft Office
  • Basic understanding of IP-based network communications
  • Ability to perform basic network troubleshooting
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers, municipal officials, emergency responders, and the public
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality


On-the-job paid training will be provided.


Work Schedule


Applicants should carefully review the work schedule before applying.


The Nassau County TMC operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and holidays. TMC Operators work 12-hour shifts following a 2-2-3 Panama schedule:

  • 2 days on
  • 2 days off
  • 3 days on
  • 2 days off
  • 2 days on
  • 3 days off


This schedule provides every other weekend off.


Operators work one of the following 12-hour shifts:

  • Day Shift: 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM
  • Overnight Shift: 10:00 PM to 10:00 AM


Operators rotate between the day shift and overnight shift approximately every two months. Candidates must be willing and able to work both day and overnight shifts on a regular rotating basis.


Additional overtime opportunities may be available, particularly during significant weather events, major roadway incidents, special events, or other emergencies.
