You join a 7-person HESQ team (Sr. Safety Specialist, Environmental Specialist, Senior Chemist, Management Systems Lead, Lab Specialist and HSE Technician). - Support the remaining environmental media (water/wastewater, solid and hazardous waste) and keep the plant fully compliant with laws, permits and corporate standards
- Prepare and submit accurate regulatory reports and notices on time; lead compliance audits
- Review permits, interpret regulations and drive compliance actions with operations and plant leadership
- Apply working knowledge of Federal EPA rules, State of Texas (TCEQ) air, water and solid waste regulations, Harris County and City of Houston requirements, plus DOT and OSHA codes
- Manage the LDAR monitoring program, quarterly thermal oxidizer/flare testing and waste disposal within budget; process environmental invoices in SAP
- Train plant management and personnel on environmental responsibilities (plant training days, computer-based training)
- Provide environmental guidance on MOCs, capital appropriation requests and SOPs; run environmental reviews and recommend solutions
- Coordinate testing and conduct environmental sampling as needed
- Build productive relationships with regulatory agencies through meetings and seminars
- Track regional and state legislation; participate in groups such as the Texas Chemical Council, Texas Industry Project, Houston Regional Monitoring and the North Channel LEPC
- Report site environmental, energy and sustainability KPIs
- Follow HESQ systems including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and RCMS
WHAT YOU NEED
- 7-8+ years of progressive environmental experience in a manufacturing setting, with strong air compliance experience in Texas
- Degree preferred: B.S. in Environmental or Chemical Engineering (Environmental Science, Chemistry or related degree considered with strong experience)
- Industry background in chemical manufacturing, refining/petrochemical or pulp and paper
- Working knowledge of TCEQ regulations and Texas air permitting requirements (including NSR), plus federal and Harris County / Houston air rules
- Strong plant process understanding to evaluate the impact of new and changing regulations
- Regulation-driven and naturally curious about environmental compliance; takes ownership and accountability
- Comfortable influencing operations and leadership on environmental matters
- Able to evaluate contractors and work with minimal supervision
- Advanced MS Office; SAP preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication with agencies, plant, corporate and consultants; strong organization and project management
INTERVIEW PROCESS
Phone screen, panel interview with the plant manager, then rounds with the Regional Environmental Manager and the Environmental Director.
